Police First Thought Mother of 3-Year-Old Boy Died by Suicide. Now the Boyfriend Faces a Murder Charge.

Police in Sumpter Township, a rural community in the southwest corner of Wayne County, initially investigated the June death of Haleigh Pace as a suicide.

But now, her boyfriend is facing a charge of murdering Pace, 24, who had a three-year-old son, WXYZ reports.

According to WXYZ, Sumpter Township police said that David McPherson, 39, called 911 on June 29 to report that his girlfriend, Pace, had shot herself in the head and was dying in their bedroom.

But further investigation resulted in McPherson being arraigned Thursday on charges of second-degree murder and felony firearm possession.

The victim's brother, Evan Pace, told WXYZ: “This was really out of character. Anybody who knows her knows she wouldn't have done this to herself. My nephew Damien was her entire world, and she worked two jobs, busting her butt to try to support him and make a better life for herself.”

A GoFundMe page has been established for the three-year-old son. As of early Monday morning, the fund had raised nearly $13,000.
