City Beach Glow-Up: Detroit Lakes Unveils Bold Waterfront Transformation Plans

Detroit Lakes is preparing for a sweeping renovation of its iconic City Beach, with final plans approved by the City Council as part of the West Lake Drive improvement project. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2026 and aims to enhance accessibility, aesthetics, and visitor experience across the lakefront.

The redesigned beach will feature seven upgraded “nodes” at key intersections from Washington Avenue to Legion Drive. Each node will include ADA-compliant boardwalks, shaded seating areas, screened shelters, outdoor rinse showers, and improved landscaping. The design preserves grassy open areas while expanding pedestrian pathways and shaded rest zones.

A new 6-foot-wide concrete beachwalk will replace the current narrow path along the shoreline, designed to gently curve for a more natural, scenic walking experience. City officials are considering decorative stamped or colored concrete for added visual appeal.

As part of the beautification effort, approximately 45 new trees will be planted to restore greenery lost during adjacent roadwork. The plan also includes a reimagined boat launch with a more efficient U-shaped entry and an accessible kayak launch closer to Lake Avenue for better functionality.

Outdated bathhouses at Rossman and Legion intersections will be removed, clearing the way for future development and improved public space. The project’s estimated cost ranges from $2.6 million to $2.9 million, funded in part by a half-percent local sales tax approved by voters in April.

Construction will occur in phases, with the section from Washington to Minnesota Avenues completed before the Fourth of July. Additional work west of Rossman Avenue will follow in late summer. Final bid awards are expected this December.

City leaders say the project reflects a broader commitment to making Detroit Lakes a year-round destination. The revitalized beach is expected to boost tourism, enhance community pride, and create a more inviting lakeside environment for both residents and visitors.
