Ex-Inkster Mayor Patrick Wimberly, 51, was sentenced Thursday in Detroit federal court to two years in prison for demanding $100,000 in bribe payments from a city developer.
Wimberly served as mayor from 2019 to 2023.
In the spring of 2022, he demanded $100,000 in cash to facilitate the sale of city property to the developer, identified only by the U.S. Attorney's Office as "Person A."
The developer initially paid $5,000 a month to the mayor and later increased the payments to $10,000.
The bribes totaled $50,000 before the FBI intervened and blocked the parcel transfer to the developer.
“We know that an honest leader gives stability to his city, and one who is greedy for bribes tears it down," U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. said in a statement. "Mr. Wimberly dishonored his office so that he could line his pockets, and we will not let crooked politicians undermine our local government."
